Macrocosm is a tile-based 2D top-down video game where the player takes on the role of the owner of a trading caravan, traveling a procedural-generated science fantasy world. Your goal is to manage your trading company by buying, selling and transporting goods and valuable between the disparate towns and settlements of the world. Currently the following features are implemented:

  • Procedural-generate the world with realistic terrain, placement of rivers, water and settlements. Never play the same map twice.
  • Travel a pixel art world as the avatar of a trading caravan.
  • Different settlements produce different goods and commodities, take on contracts, buy and sell goods from one settlement and trade in another.
  • Low-tech science-fantasy setting with the world-lore and background told passively through the in-game world, items and mechanics.

I started working on the initial concepts of the game in the fall of 2021 as a way to improve my software engineering and C++ skills. Gradually the project took on a life of its own. I have since then been working as a solo developer, progressively chipping away so that it resembles a playable game while simultaneously acting as the lead writer and developing the world lore and story-lines.

I see the development of Macrocosm as a long journey and I will incrementally add features and improvements as time goes by so I encourage you to check back regularly.
